ResMed S9 Error Messages

CPAP machines are becoming smarter with each new model released. The ResMed S9 is one of the first CPAP devices that display an error message. We compiled a list of the most frequent S9 error messages. This should give you an idea of potential causes of the failure and how to remedy the issue.

Motor life exceeded
This message will display when you reach 21,900 hours of use (5 years, 12 hours per day). That is the expected life of the blower motor and replacing it is recommended. When we replace a blower motor, we change the blower hours to 0, which will stop the message from displaying (at least until another 21,900 hours). Changing the blower hours can only be completed through the ResMed computerized software. This is just another reason why you should use a ResMed Authorized Service Center such as us!
Motor fault, contact service provider
There are several reasons why your CPAP will display this message, however, they all result with needing the blower motor replaced.
Humidifier fault, replace humidifier
There are several possible causes for this message.
  • Device has been left in a hot environment. Let the machine cool down and try again.
  • Humidifier has been filled with cold water while the humidifier is still hot after therapy. Let the machine cool down and try again.
  • Humidifier has been filled with ice cold water on a warm evening. You guessed it, let the machine cool down and try again.
  • Humidifier has been filled with hot water. Ah - a curve ball. Fill the water chamber with room air.
  • Faulty humidifier. Typically, one or all of the humidifier components are faulty. This most commonly happens where there is water damage. This would require further diagnosis by a certified CPAP repair technician to find the exact cause and appropriate course of action.
Invalid PSU, connect a ResMed Power Supply unit
The device recognizes an aftermarket power supply has been connected. Unfortunately, there is no work around for this other than purchasing an OEM power supply, item number 36821. You can purchase one here.
High current fault, contact service provider
This is typically caused by a faulty power supply. You can purchase one here.
High temperature fault, refer to user manual
First, check your filter to make sure it is clean and the air intake is not occluded. It could also be if the humidifier is too warm causing condensation buildup in the tubing. The more likely cause is either the blower motor or main PCA board.
Heated tube fault, replace tube
This can either be caused by the tube or the tube connection at the back of the humidifier. There are three small brass connections that engage when the heated tube is attached. If one of these is missing, then you will get this message. If it looks intact, then a new tube should fix it.
System error, please contact service provider
This is a general message that doesn't really help anyone determine what's going on with the machine. It could be the power supply or blower motor, but the more likely cause would be the main PCA board.

Whatever the cause, we have the repair parts and ResMed trained technicians to repair any ResMed S9 problem.
